2025 Spring Adopt-A-Highway Report

When I think about the Spring highway cleanup I tend to Smile. I smile when I

think about the volunteers that came together at Dareo’s Pizza, in preparation for

our walk, April 26th . Our ranks included a couple youngsters and get this, we were

the biggest group since May of 2014 and set the record for first timers since

October of 2010.

Jeff and his boy Alex slipped over to the Hy-Vee gas station while we were waiting

to leave and returned with a case of bottled water. The manager had asked what

our group was up to and then insisted on donating water. Thanks Hy-Vee for the

water and the smile.

We split into North and South groups and car pooled down to our stretch of

Highway 115 South of the Harrisburg Corner. It was 50 degrees with a wind of

10mph gusting to 16mph out of the S.E. The ditches were dry and had been

mowed late in the Fall so the trash had fewer places to hide. One hour and one

mile later we left our ditches spotless. Along with lots of single serve liquor

bottles there also seems to be an amazing number of vape devices being

discarded. This Spring’s haul of interesting and “Finder Keeper” items included: A

universal Big Green Egg grill cover, a $1 bill, two unopened condoms, a used

pregnancy test, a plastic storage tub, a plush stuffed pig, a new mascara, and a

Samsung Galaxy S5 cell phone.

Our group of nineteen returned to Dareo’s for pizza, liquid replenishment, and

good conversation with friends. I can’t think of a more enjoyable way to have

spent my Saturday morning. Thank you SFCC for picking up the tab.

At the April 29th Drive and Dine gathering in Valley Springs Joe Bruggeman raised

his hand when the group was asked, “who owns a Big Green Egg grill?”, and now

he has a brand new, in the bag, grill cover. After Mike Hardy checked with the

Lincoln County Sherriff we ultimately donated the cell phone to charity which will

extract the gold and recycle its metals. I never actually saw the $1 bill but trust

that it was recycled immediately upon discovery. The plush toy went home with

Brookelyn to be cleaned and live on. I’m not sure who found the storage tub but I

ended up with it and will put it to good use.

C & R Supply graciously offers the use of their dumpsters for the pickup load of

trash that our cleanups produce. This saves our D.O.T. the hassle of removal.

Thank you.

The Sioux Falls Corvette Club continues to keep its commitment to the SD Adopt-

a-Highway program. The volunteers listed below helped keep that promise this

Spring. Thank you: Dusty Miller, Kathy Miller, Barb Hardy, Mike Hardy, Paul Dyke,

Lori Dyke, Jeff Gifford, Alex Gifford, Bruce Langhoff, Brookelyn Sank, Patti Fox,

Don Fox, Jill Rowe, John Runge, Jen Johnke, Ryan Berg, Ian Berg, Denise Berg, and

John Kolander.

Respectfully submitted,

Dusty Miller
