2023 Fall Adopt-A-Highway Report

January 25, 2024

The morning of Saturday September 30th was a drop dead gorgeous day. You could not have ordered better weather for a mile walk in the ditch. The ditches were dry and even mowed in some areas. The litter was easily spotted and removed. We picked our ditches clean and came up with a light haul. The finder keeper goes to Dusty with the recovery of

someone’s 2014 Sturgis Rally bandana. Hey,.. it’s no mountain bike but like I said, it was a light haul. Lest I forget, let me say thanks to C&R Supply for letting us dump our Haul in their dumpsters.

Of course none of this works without volunteers. My Mother would say, “Many hands make for light work”. This Club is so fortunate to have so many that are inclined to “Walk-A-Mile…Now and Then” to keep this community service project going for more than 30 years.

I look around at the group gathered in the parking lot this morning. My wife Kathy is helping fit safety vests. There are my dear friends Roger and Lola Coon who have been regulars forever. Roger wouldn’t let a stroke stop him a year ago and Lola literally just took off her arm brace before this morning’s walk. Joyce VanDerWilt is also a great supporter and knows the routine pretty well after eleven ditch walks over the years. There are Dave Rowe, Kathy and Larry Mortensen, and Paul Dyke, all veterans of the Adopt-A-Highway program. I was surprised to find out that our friends Deb and Greg Johnson were first timers. Statistically, the vast majority of members that participate once will be back every now and then. Time will tell, but I think we’ll see Deb and Greg again.

I’m not authorized to speak on behalf of the SD Department of Transportation, BUT if I was, I would say, “Thank you to all the members of the Sioux Falls Corvette Club for your unwavering support of the Adopt-A-Highway program. Thanks to the half of you who are able to participate in the walks now and then and to all members that pay for the pizza with your dues”.

A group of good people got together for a couple hours to do a good deed for a good cause and had a good time. End of report.

Respectfully submitted,

Dusty Miller
