Adopt-A-Highway - Fall 2024

December 1, 2024

October 5th was a beautiful autumn day. The temperature was 70 degrees with a slight wind out of the south. Kathy and I arrived at the Dario’s Pizza parking lot at 9:15am and departed at 9:30 for our two miles of adopted highway 115 south of town. With a smaller crew than normal, we worked the four miles of ditches a little different than usual. We parked the truck in the middle and filled our pockets with orange garbage bags.  Kathy walked south a mile in the East ditch and back a mile in the West ditch. I did the opposite to the North. I know that violates the “everyone walks one mile” rule but it was necessary.

The ditches were completely dry. The State had sprayed for thistles and mowed some portions. Due to tall vegetation, some trash does escape collection during Fall cleanings and rests patiently for our Spring visit. All trash, that was visible, was collected along with the few items found by stepping on them. We picked up our bags of trash from the roadsides and were headed back to town by 11:45.

Thank you to all the members that have participated over the decades walking the ditches. Thank you C&R Supply for allowing us to use your dumpsters. The next opportunity to participate will be next May. Look for the signup sheet at the April meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
